Learning to Trust Ourselves, Again

HealTrust is not easy. For many of us, it can take years for us to trust someone else. Unfortunately, as we get older, some of us find it increasingly harder to trust ourselves. Perhaps it is because we place so much faith in technology that at a base level we are beginning to doubt what we intuitively know. We have no trouble trusting Google, cable news and friends but when it comes to trusting in gut feelings and a sixth sense many of us get cold feet.

Lately there has been a big push in holistic healing to have people return to their inner selves. The thinking is that we have become so reliant on technology that we are losing touch with our human nature and instincts. This means that when our bodies are telling us to rest or that we are over-exerting ourselves we tend not to listen. We are conditioned to believe what the clock tells us and what a search engine recommends but we are forgetting the most important guide, our own senses.

It’s not unusual for people today to lose touch with their inner self. Whether it’s because of 70-hour work weeks or an information overload many of us are dependent on a wired world and this dependency erodes our ability to think for ourselves and trust in our instincts.

Why this is important is because we can’t allow technology to control us. It is fine to use smart phones and programs to help with our daily life but when these gadgets being dictating behavior then there is a problem. Now, more than ever, people need to reconnect with their soul and once again learn how to trust the many signals being sent to the mind from the body. Being able to think clearly and make decisions based on what feels right is an art form that is becoming lost. The more app’s we download the more power we give up.

Today, take a moment to note how many things you depend on to make choices for you. Identifying the many ways we are caught up in the web of technology is a necessary first step in getting untangled. You don’t have to throw away your iPhone or put away your tablet. Just be aware of how you are making decisions in your life and how often you trust yourself or some device.
