Relieving Holiday Stress

Christmas stress - busy santa woman
The holidays can be hectic

The holiday season can be a fun-filled time with good cheer, parties and special moments with family and friends. However, in the rush to buy gifts, attend social events and travel to visit with loved ones it is easy to get stressed out quick. The holiday season is often fraught with people suffering from frayed nerves, insomnia and even depression. Not everyone has a home full of people during this time of year and all the images of people having a great time can cause loneliness for many.

To avoid the holiday blues we recommend a number of holistic treatments that can restore peace and calm to your hectic life.

Reiki – During times of stress it is a good idea to seek out soothing treatments. An afternoon at a day spa and an appointment with your favorite masseuse are great ways to unwind, and so is the ancient practice of Reiki. A soothing form of healing that is non-invasive, Reiki is used by many people to relieve stress and promote a deep level of relaxation. When the holidays are causing you to lose control, contact a Reiki Master and let the “laying of hands” do its magic.

Aromatherapy – Soothing feelings come from many sources and scents are one. Using essential oils obtained from special plants it is possible to relieve stress, help fall asleep and induce relaxation. You can find specially mixed essential oil blends that are designed for specific treatment including meditation oils, stress oils and invigorating oils. Of course, scented candles are also a good idea and many people enjoy the pleasing aroma of balsam fir, cinnamon and spiced apple around this time of year.

Disconnect – One reason people get stressed out this time of year is from being too plugged in. Being slaves to our smart phones, television and tablets will surely lead to feelings of anxiety (am I buying the right presents), depression (why is everyone else so happy) and guilt (I can’t give my kids everything they want). The media is rife with impulse messages this time of year and it can overwhelm anyone. Do yourself a favor and turn it off. You don’t need to be Scrooge or a hermit but you will feel a lot better if you don’t give in to mass consumerism and find some quiet time during your day.
